Weekly Blog 4/15/19: Work During Work, Planner Love, and Weekly Video Digest

Image description: A close-up shot of part of an April 2019 calendar page. Someone has written “in office 7:30” on the first line.

Hey guys, it’s Taylor! Today I am talking about how I manage a “work/work balance,” how much I love planners (and why), while also going over the videos I posted this week.

I’ve been trying to manage what I’m calling a “work-work balance.” NOw that I work full time as an artist, I have to find a way to manageย that work with my work as an independent artist. Basically, finding a way to paint at work and then still have energy and time to paint at home.

It’s not been easy. I gave myself a couple weeks of just day-job work, actually, to let myself get used to it. As I’ve never worked full-time before, this was a big transition for me, and I’m still adjusting. However, yesterday (Sunday) I was able to start painting some of my own stuff again. It felt really good to just work on something unrelated to my day job and just enjoy painting for painting’s sake.

One thing that’s been helping me a lot during this time has been planners and notebooks. Stationery may seem an obsolete or redundant product, in the day of endless planning/organization software and website options – but for many of us, having an “offline” or “analog” planning system is not only preferable but essential.

Personally, I don’t always have access to a computer, and my phone runs out of battery very easily. So having a notebook is important for that reason. And…well, I just enjoy pretty stationery. So yeah, notebooks are an important part of my life – and they have been instrumental in me figuring out how to balance the various aspects of my life and still Get Shit Done.

I honestly am not sure how much longer I can keep up 3 videos a week – that’s a LOT to do while working full time, running an Etsy shop, and so on – but I’ll keep trying for now. ๐Ÿ™‚ For now my update schedule is videos Monday-Wednesday-Friday, and a blog post every Monday. The first and 15th of each month also have card reading videos – though, this month, those aligned with Monday video days.

Without further ado, here are the videos from this week:

WHAT PLANNER SHOULD I USE? | Comparing Different Styles of Planner

I realized I’ve used and accumulated a lot of planners of different styles over the years, so I thought I’d give examples and demonstrations of each here. I go over Bullet Journals, premade planners, ring planners, and more.
Rose Gold Personal Wide Rings Setup | Recollections Creative Year 6-Ring Planner

This is just a setup video of my latest planner. I actually wound up using this one for my spiritual journaling. I love setup videos so I thought it would be really fun to show my process too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Weekly Update 11/27/17 | Journaling, Grimoire Work, and a YouTube URL!!

Hey y’all!!

I’m busy with some Real Life stuff, but all is well – I’m just generally busy and stressed. Anxiety has been a major issue too, but I’m doing my utmost to maintain this site and my other accounts.

Speaking of, I have some minor but exciting news: I finally became eligible for a YouTube custom URL!! Which means that instead of a long series of letters and numbers, I can direct people to youtube.com/c/JulianJaymes ! SUPER excited about that. This is all because I hit 100 subscribers. 100 people!! 100 people wanted to see my videos?! Whaaaat?! Weird. Thank you to every single one!!

My YouTube, by the way, is primarily about three things: Tarot, art, and journaling. My current top video is my first video showing my grimoire – it has over 2500 views, which is crazy to me. It’s not even that good a video, I want to say, but if people like it and maybe got inspired, then it’s all good. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m working on a new grimoire, though, so I’m excited to share that soon too. I’m doing more planning this time, and Im hopeful that it will turn out well.

I’ve been working a looooot on Traveler’s Notebook stuff, primarily filming videos on the TN system and making TN’s and inserts for them. And the new grimoire I’m making is in a TN too! I’m working on making more for sale, but until now, here’s the one I have listed:ย https://www.etsy.com/listing/559584096/black-leather-extra-wide-travelers?ref=shop_home_feat_1

Thank you so, so much to everyone who’s subscribed to my YouTube recently, and to the people who subscribed ages ago too…I’m really excited to share more with you, so please stay tuned!

Creating My First Tarot Deck!

Hey y’all! Big news…

I am currently working on my first original Tarot deck!

Yep, I’m finally doing a proper full Tarot deck. It’s going to be full color and fully illustrated, and will largely follow the Rider-Waite-Smith system. I’m drawing inspiration a lot from the Millennial generation – no, please don’t wince; we’re not ALL bad. (Mostly. Not all.)

I’m bringing in a lot of the “aesthetics” (sadly accepting that this is the new meaning of this word) that have become so popular on online platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and yes, to an extent, Tumblr. The “boho/hippie” revival will be featured in the suit of Wands; “pastel goth” and Lolita fashion in the Cups; “emo/scene” in the Swords; and, my personal favorite, the “Witchy Aesthetic” in the Pentacles (what other suit could I choose?).

I also intend to incorporate, to an extent, the Millennial attempt to embrace diversity. I realize that this is probably a controversial decision, since representation is so painfully heavy-handedly (and badly) overdone in a lot of media. I do not intend to, like some movies and TV series, populate my world with a perfect collection of token stereotypes (which is not, by the way, good representation). Representation in Tarot and in art is a topic for another blog (perhaps a series) but rest assured that not everyone in my deck will be a fully-abled neurotypical straight white cis male who conforms to all of society’s rules about how he should behave.

Nope, I get bored WAY too easily to just stick with THAT. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ve completed two cards.

Eight of Swords:

Four of Wands:

These are just very rough previews – the actual cards will likely be quite different.

If you’d like to hear more about the process of creating these cards, here’s a video I made rambling about everything from Cardcaptor Sakura to inaccurate representation in media to Instagram and Pinterest fashion boards…

Yes, it’s a terrible thumbnail. No, I don’t like YouTube either.

I also have a big announcement to make soon, though I can’t make it yet because it’s a collaboration of sorts, and I don’t make a habit of revealing my commissioned works before the commissioner permits it. But rest assured…something big is in the works. Something…epic.

Tarot For Recovery: Recovery Profile Spread [VIDEO]

Hey y’all! Here’s the first thing I’ve made for the Tarot For Recovery series. It’s just a 12 card spread to tell you a bit about how you’re doing in your recovery! As always, you can useย a virtual tarot deck website or app if you don’t have cards of your own.

Of course, this is all assuming you know the meanings of various Tarot cards, and that you’re familiar with the tradition. If you’re new, I highly recommend learntarot.com and biddytarot.com, or Kelly-Ann Maddox, Owlmoon513, and The Truth in Story on YouTube. All are great resources for learning the Tarot.

Tarot For Recovery is an upcoming Tarot course/resource/website that focuses on using Tarot and oracle cards to promote recovery from mental illness, trauma, addiction, codependency, or really anything else you want to “recover” from. All are welcome in TfR.

Please follow julianjaymes.com for updates!
