An indie oracle deck devoted to the magic and myth of Mary Magdalene.
See the Magdalene through a whole new lens.
The Magdalene archetype reaches back through time to the beginning of human history. The process of engaging with her energy is still as powerful as ever. Now, meet the Magdalene anew in this beautiful indie oracle deck.
I was moved to create a Magdalene-themed oracle deck years ago, but only recently found the time and creative energy to make it a reality. Now, in 2022-2023, I am doing the illustrations and preparing for the deck’s new release date: July 22, 2023. (For those keeping track at home, that’s Mary Magdalene’s feast day!)
This deck seeks to explore the myth and magic of the Magdalene archetype through lenses of love, alternative spirituality, and diverse human experience. Making decks that many different people can find themselves in (both visually and spiritually) is a challenge in itself, and making a Magdalene deck that is open to all is an even bigger challenge. Whether you are coming from a background of alternative spirituality or Christian tradition, the combination of a Christian historical figure with the practice of divination might bring out some resistance or struggle.
But I believe that the bringing-together of seeming opposites is a big part of the magic of the Magdalene…and it’s something the world really needs right now. It will take far more than any one project to bring humanity back together, but, this deck might be a tiny part of that healing process.
It is my offering to the world.
I hope you’ll come along for the ride!
The process behind the illustrations
Early on, I sketched rough versions of the cards in pencil, trying to feel out what the deck’s aesthetic might be. While I am generally an anime/manga-inspired artist, this deck has led me to explore a slightly more realistic art style.
Originally I was planning to make this deck a watercolor project, but I had difficulty getting the smoothness and clarity I had originally envisioned. I love watercolors, but at some point, I realized they just weren’t right for me for this project.
In the end, I – reluctantly – tried doing the illustrations digitally. The result has been exactly what I was looking for. With digital work, I am able to not only render the work in as fine detail as I want, but I can play a lot with transparency, adjusting up to 30 layers in one file to achieve my vision.
Details about the proposed printing process
This deck will be professionally printed and will include 44 fully illustrated cards. It will be available through my MPC Marketplace storefront; an accompanying guidebook will be made available for free as a PDF here on this website.
The deck will be available in two sizes: standard oracle size (3.5 x 5 inches) and a pocket/poker size (2.5 x 3.5). I am not yet able to quote a final price, but I will not be marking them up much, as I want this deck to be able to reach and help as many people as possible.
Estimated release date is July 22, 2023.
